“How to Build Educators’ SEL Awareness when Engaging in Race and Equity Work within Schools” | Presented at CPSEL Conference 2021
Dr. Maria Akinyele & Dr. Sarah Benis Scheier-Dolberg
C.A.R. Framework Overview
We constructed the C.A.R. Framework as an instructional approach for coaches to use in schools to facilitate meaningful conversations relating to race and equity.
C.A.R. encourages movement beyond individual reflection and consumption of facilitated-provided presentations.
Sequentially, we use 1-2 activities from each column – Check Yourself, Act Together, Reflect to Act – to create a meaningful experience for all participants to engage in reflective practice related to equity and race in schools.
We include examples of activities associated with each column in the handout below.
|Check Yourself – Emotional Self-Awareness Tools||Act Together – Social Awareness Tools||Reflect to Act – Adult Learning Tools|
|Equity Story + Emotions Lens||Making Equity Metaphors||Wisdom of Emotions – Educator Action Planning|
|Wisdom of Emotions – Hitting the Pause||Practice of Empathetic Listening||Peer Coaching for Equity|
|“Think-Feel-Act” with Equity and/or Race Problems of Practice||Identity Circles||“Think-Feel-Act” with Equity and/or Race Problems of Practice|
